Catharine Young, Colin Young and David Clark, VIVE- Vital Improvements in Vaccine Efficiency

Growing up in South Africa during apartheid, Catharine Young lived in a land of contradiction defined by a rich, diverse culture and wide-spread inequity. After emigrating to the U.S. and completing a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University, Catharine’s passion for her homeland inspired her to give back through VIVE – Vital Improvements in Vaccine Efficiency.

To date, vaccines are the most cost effective health intervention ever developed. In spite of the promises of preventative healthcare, nearly 50% of vaccines are lost during delivery to patients, translating into the loss of millions of lost dollars and resulting in millions of preventable deaths.

Working together with her partner Colin Young and David Clark from Blueprint International, their VIVE app will track and assist vaccine deliveries by creating a system to identify obstacles in supply chains. The information provided through VIVE will be used to create innovative solutions designed to extend the viability and lifespan of vaccines.

Over the next 12 months, Blueprint International will partner with vaccine suppliers in South Africa in order to test and refine the new app through a pilot program in the Western Cape. Within the next 5 to 10 years, VIVE will be operational in developing countries across the world.
