Brown Mtekela Mkandawire – Construction Of A Change Room & Handwashing Facility For Girls Learners At Primary School
The Rural Education Support and Rehabilitation Unit is a Malawian local organization. The organization intends to embark on a project for primary school aged girls who have been missing classes during menstruation due to lack of changing rooms, hand washing facilities and sanitary pads. The project will be coordinated by Brown Mtekela Mkandawire and assisted by Oliver Kamanga, Emmanuel Mathiya and Thembi Zgambo. Initial interest in this project came after realizing that there is a high school drop out rate of young girls because the learning environment is not conducive and lacks facilities for the girls during menstruation, which has compromised the efforts of promoting girls education.
The girls will be supported in understanding how to manage menstruation, a changing room will be constructed for use during menstruation and community engagement will be encouraged to provide them with sanitary pads. The project will be conducted in Blantyre, Traditional Authority Kapeni and Karonga District, Traditional Authority Wasambo, Malawi. To date, the project has mobilized the community and identified a place where farming will take place to raise proceeds to procure sanitary pads for these girls learners.
This project believes that an increase in more girls going to school is very important and critical to the development of the country.
