Black History 101 Mobile Museum – 5th Element Collectors and Curators Society

Date grant awarded: April 2, 2018

Grantee Name: Khalid el-Hakim
Project Name: 5th Element Collectors and Curators Society
Grant Location: Kalamazoo, MI, USA

Project Description: The 5th Element Collectors and Curators Society is the first educational outreach initiative of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum. In the summer of 2018, Black History 101 Mobile Museum founder Khalid el-Hakim will facilitate a series of workshops for high school students in the city of Kalamazoo, MI focusing on the various things students collect. Their personal collections will be the starting point of building literacy and communication skills through researching the historical context of the material they collect and seeing the entrepreneurial potential in what they collect. We believe when students become “experts” in the cultural material they collect and are genuinely passionate about will help them make seamless connections between their own personal experiences, school, and community. This grassroots approach to engage youth is rooted in the 5th element of hip-hop culture which means developing a “knowledge of self”. The culminating project will be a public exhibit of their collections which they will plan and curate.
