Atema Addy and Jamilatu Konneh, UPLIFT Reading Rooms

Date grant awarded: July 19, 2016

The greatest challenge facing the transit community in Duazon, Liberia, is their lack of literary resources, which in turn affect the reading and writing culture. Atema Addy and Jamilatu Konneh have established the UPLIFT Reading Rooms to provide five primary and secondary schools with classroom resources to not only boost literacy and retention rates but also to provide a safe space for youth to explore the unknown. Over 3,000 texts have been collected to date and nationwide teams of volunteers have been formed for fundraising platforms.
