Almira Astudillo Gilles, Project Coast 22

Date grant awarded: March 4, 2016

Abandoned fishing gear makes up approximately ten percent of trash in our world’s oceans, which damage sensitive ecosystems and litter beaches, including the 22,500 miles of Philippine coastline. Almira Gilles has created Project Coast 22 in Iloilo, Philippines, to help women upcycle discarded fishing gear into other products, such as flowers and stuffing for throw pillows. Although women are the primary participants, the entire village plays a part, with collecting and cleaning discarded nets to beautify their community. The grant from the Pollination Project will help maintain the net-crafting skills of coastal village residents and allow expansion of the program to to other places in the Philippines
