Date grant awarded: 3/2/2017

Blair Grocery is an urban farm and food justice academy in the heart of the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded by Nat Turner, in collaboration with the Blair family and local youth, their mission is to create a resource-rich safe space for youth empowerment and sustainable community development.

Blair Grocery provides empowering, reflective, and dignified jobs for youth in the Lower 9th Ward, and employs highly critical pedagogical techniques — from systems thinking to upstream problem solving to intensive experiential learning.

They use food as a vehicle for generating economy AND engaging marginalized youth in the “good work,” and operate as an interdisciplinary learning academy for domestic and international volunteers and service learners.
