In Thaba Bosiu, Lesotho, small farmers are susceptible to chronic underperformance due to low value crop production, thus struggling to hold a profit from their maize production. With little variety in local markets, farmers seek variety and thus Alex Stainburn has created the Kingdom Asparagus project, where high value asparagus fields create employment opportunities. Although the crop takes a lot of tender, love and care, the project ultimately increases farmer’s income by a factor of ten after an initial startup of three years.
