Ako Peter Agbor, Raising a Youth Workforce to Mitigate Climate Change
Ako Peter Agbor is a representative of Go Green Students International (GGSI) at the University of Buea in Cameroon. GGSI is an international student organization founded in 2010 with a mission of promoting youth/student participation in sustainable climate change solutions on both a local and global level.
Many local citizens of Cameroon remain largely uninformed about the dangers of global climate change rendering local mitigation strategies ineffective. One of GGSI’s primary motivations is to educate youth throughout the country so that they can return to their own communities and increase local awareness.
To date, GGSI has organized several international conferences at the University of Buea and has received several commendations and patronage from the University’s Vice Chancellor.
Through their project, the student organization recently held its 3rd conference in Cameroon. The conference was attended by local students, resource people from the government’s conservation and sustainable development department, and the heads of NGOs leading the fight against climate change in the area.
