Carly Wilson was pregnant with her first child when she found herself researching gender reveal ideas on Pinterest. As she scrolled it became obvious to the Gold Coast-based mother that releasing gender-coloured balloons was a popular choice – and that worried her. Because most people, even those conscious of the environment and the impact man-made waste has on marine life, believe balloons are biodegradable. Many of them are marketed that way.
