How much money do you need to give to make a difference in the world? How much money could bring more joy and meaning into your life? $10? $100? $1,000,000?
The Pollination Project is launching #givehappy, a unique fundraising campaign that is all about making meaning with money! As we celebrate the year behind and look towards the year ahead, our entire Pollination Project Family — donors, grantees, social media friends, advisors, and ambassadors — is invited to participate in #givehappy.
Two years ago, we set out to create a foundation where we could make an impact with a small amount of money. We give $1000 seed grants to “practical dreamers” and their startup social change projects. By the end of 2014, we will have supported 790 early stage initiatives in 53 countries and in almost every state of the US.
We’ve funded people from all walks of life — farmers in rural Kenya, activists in New York City, artists in the Galapagos Islands, and teachers in Omaha. Our grantees are everyday heroes working on important social change issues, spreading compassion and kindness in the world.
#givehappy is about investing in great people.
When the ebola outbreak began in Sierra Leone and Liberia, it hit our local grantees hard. Morris Darbo, a grantee and animal rights advocate in Liberia, has gathered a group of volunteers to serve subsistence farmers in the most remote parts of Lofa County. They will go on foot to 20 remote villages where there are no passable roads, to bring them hand washing buckets and sanitizing supplies. Safiatu Farma, a grantee and gender equity advocate in Sierra Leone, is reaching out to rural communities in her region to train them on ebola prevention efforts. Together they will reach thousands of people in rural Liberia and Sierra Leone. Providing simple $15 buckets and $4 chlorine tablets could save the lives of hundreds of people.
#givehappy harnesses the power of early investments.
Our small startup grants are often the fuel that an up-and-coming social change entrepreneur needs early on to help them to take their project to the next level. Our grantees have gone on to win prestigious national and international awards, gain media attention, and parlay their seed grants from us into much larger grants from others.
#givehappy is about the pure joy of giving.
The #givehappy campaign is our upgrade on the expression, “give ‘til it hurts.” Why would anyone ever want to “give ‘til it hurts” when you could find joy, hope, inspiration and connection from the experience of giving instead? #givehappy is for everyone, no matter how much or little you have to give. It is your chance to make meaning with your money, whether it is $1 or $100 or $1000.
#givehappy means every dollar will be used to its fullest.
Because of a gift from our founder Ariel Nessel, 100% of our operational expenses are already covered. So 100% of all donations we receive go straight into the hands of people like Safiatu Farma and Morris Darbo.
As 2014 comes to a close, we hope you will join us to upgrade your experience of giving. Give until your heart sings. Give until you want to give more. Give until it is the most exhilarating thing you’ve ever done. Give until you are happy!
